The skin around the eyes is particularly susceptible to dryness in winter because it’s thinner, has less fatty tissue, and no oil glands compared to the skin on your face. Therefore dryness, sensitivity, fine lines and wrinkles will occur around the eyes first.
During winter or colder months of the year, the eyes need a little extra care to cope with the weather conditions.
The cold air and wind reduce humidity in the air, as does indoor heating, and this removes moisture from the skin. Harsh winter weather can also damage the skin’s protective barrier which is responsible for locking moisture in, making it more vulnerable to dehydration, sensitivity, and irritation. Rubbing your eyes is a natural response and may give you some instant relief, but it only makes the problem worse.
There are steps you can take when winter comes along if your skin is prone to dryness and sensitivity.

Be gentle with your eyes area

Here’s how to care for the skin when removing make-up or applying a product.
- When cleansing, apply eye makeup remover to a cotton pad and dab onto your eye area
- Don’t rub, use gentle outward stroking motions to remove the makeup
- When all make up is removed, use a soft face cloth or another cotton pad soaked in lukewarm water (not hot, this will dry the skin further) and gently dab to remove any excess cleanser
- Add a small amount of eye cream to your finger and dab gently around the eye area
- Work the eye cream in a circular motion moving from the inside of the eye in an outward motion. This also gives the eye area a daily massage to relax the muscles and stimulate blood circulation to the area.
Use sun protection
