Rosehip Oil for psoriasis
Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin condition that can flare up at any time. It happens because the rate of skin cell production essentially goes into overdrive.
This rapid production and turnover of skin cells causes scaling on the skin’s surface
The skin feels itchy, uncomfortable, appears red, patchy and scaly. It primarily occurs on the hands, feet, neck, scalp and face.
Psoriasis can be a stubborn condition to shift and very frustrating for people who have it
Like any stubborn condition it can take some trial and error to find a remedy that will help you. Rosehip Oil has a high composition of both essential fatty acids and vitamin A, both proven to protect against inflammation and oxidative stress. What causes psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an auto-immune response which results in the body attacking itself. This may sound a little concerning, but the process works like this. Under normal conditions, the role of white blood cells is to eliminate invading bacteria and fight off infections. However with psoriasis, the white blood cells attack the skin cells because the skin cell production has gone into overdrive.
This unusual activity triggers white blood cells to mobilise to the affected area in order to heal it by encouraging new skin cell production. The new skin cells are produced at a faster rate than the damaged cells are shed, and so the cycle of production keeps repeating. This is what causes the skin thickening, redness and inflammation.
Rosehip Oil is rich in Essential Fatty Acids and Antioxidants, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the skin.
Psoriasis sufferers have skin that is low in essential fatty acids and prone to dehydration.
This worsens the problem of scaling and itchiness and can leave the skin open to infection from scratching and minor injuries. The application of Rosehip Oil keeps the skin moist and nourished to reduce the itching and scaling. It also provides the right pH balance and environment for healing. In addition to this, the anti-inflammatory properties of Rosehip Oil prevent infection.
Due to the high levels of essential fatty acids and antioxidants in Rosehip Oil, research has shown that Rosehip Oil provides relatively high protection against inflammation and oxidative stress for the skin.
How Rosehip Oil alleviates eczema and dermatitis
1. Essential Fatty Acids – Omega 3 and 6
Essential fatty acids are responsible for repairing damaged skin and reducing inflammation. Our body cannot produce Omega 3 and 6 so we rely on external sources to maintain the right level of these essential fatty acids.
The skin is the body’s largest organ, and Rosehip Oil is easily absorbed by the skin. With a pH balance of 5.1 which is similar to the natural oil produced by our skin, the skin is able to seal in hydration, protecting from free radicals and environmental irritants.
The high content of essential fatty acids in Rosehip Oil creates a fine film over the surface of the skin that holds in moisture and prevents the skin from becoming dehydrated and scaly. In addition, the anti-inflammatory properties of Rose Hip Oil help to prevent recurring infection.
2. Vitamin A
Our skin absorbs Vitamin A readily when applied topically. The Vitamin A in Rosehip Oil produces retinol which stimulates collagen production. This boosts the skin’s resilience and quality. It also helps to repair damaged skin tissue and retains moisture in the skin to minimise future scarring that can happen from persistent scratching. It is also effective in improving the appearance of old scars.
There are many Rosehip Oils on the market today, but none have the high levels of Vitamin A that have been maintained in Kosmea’s Rosehip Oil. Kosmea’s supercritical extraction process retains the integrity and levels of Vitamin A in our Rosehip Oil.
