Will the real Rosehip Oil stand up?

7 things to check before you make a decision to buy

Thinking of buying a bottle of Rosehip Oil and wondering which one to choose? Before you reach for your wallet, we’ve complied 7 things to check for so that you know you’re buying a quality product. If you’re going to commit to a skincare routine that includes rosehip oil, then you want to make sure your skin is being nourished by the vitamins and minerals that Rosehip Oil is known for.

Why Kosmea’s Rosehip Oil is the best on the market

Over the 28 years that we’ve been manufacturing our product, we have always stood by our original intention: to create a Rosehip Oil which retained the integrity of the potent nutrients for which it is well known.

Today, we still use the same manufacturing process which uses a supercritical (CO2) extraction method without heat or chemicals, to maintain the high levels of Vitamin A and the essential fatty acids levels of the rosehip. These two vital nutrients reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, restore and rejuvenate your skin and help to soothe and alleviate a range of skin conditions including scars, stretch marks and pigmentation, acne, dermatitis, eczema, sensitive and dry skin.

Kosmea’s Certified Organic Rosehip Oil contains up to eight times more vitamin A than competitor brands, as well as over 80 per cent essential fatty acids that help to repair and regenerate damaged skin tissue.

“Rosehip oils all look the same, but there is a difference between higher grades. Like with olive oil, we know that there is an extra virgin, there’s a first press, and there’s one that can be really cheap that has been extracted with a chemical. There are all different grades of vegetable oil, so why wouldn’t there be different grades of rosehip oil?” says Kosmea founder Marie Kapetanakis.

7 things to check before you hit the “buy” button

1. Read the label.

Check for highest to lowest ingredients. The first ingredient is usually the highest and so forth. What is on the list? Kosmea’s Rosehip Oil contains 100% Certified Organic Rosa Canina Fruit Oil – Rosehip Oil.

2. What colour is the bottle?

We use a dark brown bottle as this retains the integrity of the oil and gives it a longer shelf life, as light can affect the quality of the oil. Natural Rosehip Oil will last a long time anyway, without getting crusty around the top or smelling rancid after being left open even for days. The brown coloured bottle provides extra protection.

3. Is the colour of the oil amber or clear?

Rosehip Oil can be overly refined and lose its natural potency. It is normally amber in colour when close to its natural state with a distinct aroma. If the Rosehip Oil is clear without any smell, it has been overly refined.

4. What is the level of Vitamin A in the oil?

Check the website to find out how the rosehip is processed and extracted. Vitamin A will remain at naturally high levels when properly extracted. Kosmea’s Rosehip Oil has the highest level of Vitamin A on the market because of the supercritical extraction process we use. And why is Vitamin A important? Vitamin A is the essential ingredient which helps boost collagen and elastin production, which help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by ageing or sun damage. Vitamin A is the key ingredient in Rosehip Oil.

5. How is the Rosehip Oil extracted?

Find out more about the extraction process. There is no point buying an oil if the very nutrients you want have been diminished by the extraction process, but this is not always obvious. Our supercritical extraction process not only retains the high levels of Vitamin A, it also retains the levels of essential fatty acids, lycopene and beta-carotene.

6. Where is the Rosehip grown?

Is it ethically sourced, does it grow free and wild or is it farmed? At Kosmea, the entire process from growing and harvesting to manufacturing and bottling is carefully controlled and managed. There is something inherently good about knowing that wild free rosehips grown sustainably, supporting communities abroad, are used in the bottle you buy. The rosehips are better quality, the oil is purer, and you might even detect the hint of nature’s wild essence as you gently rub this beautiful oil into your skin.

7. Is the entire fruit used in the manufacturing process?

Many rosehip oils are manufactured using only the seed but the entire fruit, especially the skin of the rosehip, delivers up to eight times more vitamin A. Extracting the oil from the skin is harder and more expensive which is why most manufacturers don’t do it.

“We buy the whole rosehips from communities in Southern Africa, we dry them, and then we use the whole fruit. The seed doesn’t give a lot of vitamin A; there is much more vitamin A in the fruit. If you’ve got less vitamin A, you’re not going to get as many anti-ageing benefits. You know if you have a good-quality oil by the vitamin A content – our vitamin A content is 4000 micrograms per gram,” says Marie Kapetanakis, founder of Kosmea.

The benefits of a pure and natural Rosehip Oil

High In Essential Fatty Acids

Rosehip Oil is rich in Omega 3 and 6, essential fatty acids that the body cannot produce itself. Essential fatty acids are needed to repair damaged skin tissue and regenerate skin cells. Kosmea’s Certified Organic Rosehip Oil is guaranteed to contain a minimum of 80% essential fatty acids.

Benefit: Essential fatty acids and vitamins are readily absorbed by the skin to slow the breakdown of collagen and elastic fibres, helping to improve the appearance of burns, scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles.

Natural Source of Vitamin A

Rosehip Oil is rich in vitamin A (trans-retinoic acid) which helps prevent premature ageing caused by sun exposure and the ageing process. When skin is exposed to the sun, it causes an abnormal build up of elastin which triggers enzymes to remove it. These enzymes inadvertently lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastin.

Benefit: Vitamin A in rosehip oil reduces the activity of these enzymes, thereby reducing damage caused by the sun.

Full Of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are micronutrients that protect tissues in the body from the damaging effects of free radicals. Rosehip oil is rich in a range of antioxidants, including beta-carotene and lycopene.

Benefit: Antioxidants help to protect and repair skin from the effects of stress, pollution, dehydration and other environmental factors that lead to premature ageing.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

The essential fatty acids in Rosehip Oil play an important role as anti-inflammatory agents. Ideally Rosehip Oil should be used when a wound is healing, to prevent infection which causes further scarring, and to soften the skin so that it doesn’t tear as it heals, minimising scarring.

Benefit: Rosehip Oil is wonderful for both old and new scars and helps to improve them in both colour and texture.
