How the sun damages the skin

The top layer of the skin contains the pigment melanin which is responsible for protecting the deeper layers of the skin from the sun’s UV rays. Melanin causes the skin to darken so you get a nice summer tan. As these darkened epidermal cells move toward the surface, they are shed and so your tan begins to fade.

This natural process is the skin’s defence system to protect against the potentially damaging effects of UV rays on the deeper layers of the skin. The complex matrix of collagen and elastin fibres live in these deeper layers and it is this matrix which gives your skin its strength, elasticity and suppleness. The skin cells in these deeper layers are constantly regenerating new cells and shedding old ones, but this process is disrupted by UV rays. The result is sun-damaged skin, with fine lines, wrinkles and sunspots becoming more prominent.

How Rosehip Oil helps sun-damaged skin

Exposure to UV light from the sun or tanning beds is the biggest contributor to the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Rosehip Oil is rich in vitamin A and essential fatty acids, nutrients which have been proven to help with skin renewal and rejuvenation. However, even though there are many products in the market with these nutrients, Rosehip Oil is a super fine oil and able to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. Therefore, the essential nutrients in Rosehip Oil are able to do their work, repairing and restoring the delicate matrix of collagen and elastin.

Vitamin A benefits for sun-damaged skin

Rosehip Oil is rich in vitamin A (trans-retinoic acid). The latest research shows that trans-retinoic acid can help prevent premature ageing caused by sun exposure and the ageing process. When skin is exposed to the sun, it can increase levels of enzymes that lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Vitamin A in rosehip oil reduces the activity of these enzymes, reducing damage caused by the sun. Vitamin A stimulates collagen production and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Essential fatty acid benefits for sun-damaged skin

Rosehip Oil is rich in Omega 3 and 6, essential fatty acids that are needed to repair damaged skin tissue and regenerate skin cells. They regulate the skin’s oil production, maintain hydration, reduce inflammation and the signs of aging. Essential fatty acids also soothe dry and sensitive skin or skin prone to dermatitis.
